SUN RA REISSUE

The 1966 "Batman and Robin" picture disc vinyl album will be re-issued next November.

This novelty album, released in 1966 during the height of the Batman and Robin craze, was initially credited to the "The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale" and featured an album full of tracks based on the popular TV show like "The Batman Theme Song", "The Penguin Chase", and "The Batcave". The album is entirely instrumental, except for someone singing "Batmaaaan!" in the theme song. But the interesting thing about this album, and what makes it an absolute cult gem, are the musicians who are behind it all: basically a joint collaboration between Sun Ra's Arkestra and Danny Kalb's Blues Project (one of the first psychedelic rock bands as well as one of the world's first jam bands). "Dan and Dale" were actually blues guitarist Danny Kalb and Steve Katz (later of Blood, Sweat and Tears) on dueling guitars, while Sun Ra and Al Kooper take over organ duties (a Hammond B-3) and members of Ra's Arkestra play sax.

NEW ZAPPA 'BROADCAST' VINYL ALBUMS

Welcome to the United Mutations picture book  :-)

I had seen two of these titles on CD already, but they have become available on vinyl as well.
First two are on the Keyhole record label and were released last year already.
The third one should be more recent (and also out on CD apparently).

EAT THAT QUESTION - FRANK ZAPPA IN HIS OWN WORDS

  • eat that question - frank zappa in his own words
(2016, dvd, usa, sony pictures classics 048370)
The "Eat That Question" documentary has been made available on DVD.
As you probably know, the entire documentary is made up of pieces of interviews and concert fragments.
I'm half way through viewing it and it's great. (Total lenght of about 90 minutes.)
Nothing new or shocking, just a fabulous collection in the best available quality.

FRANK ZAPPA - YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE VOL.1 THRU 6

Next to the 'Road Box' edition (the wooden box that contained Vol. 5 and 6, with room for Vol. 1 to 5) that got released in the early ninetees, Ryko released a similar Japanese set in 1994.
Next to the six double CD sets, the box comes with two books with, a.o. the complete lyrics in English and in Japanese.
Although the title obviously is "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore...", in Japan, the box is better known as the "Zappa Live Box".

I had this on my want-list for quite some years now. Just never came across it for a decent price.
Until recently, that is.

FRANK ZAPPA - ZAPPATITE

Don't remember if I already mentioned the recent "Zappatite" compilation album.
Well, the spine of the CD says that it's number 106 in the FZ discography, but it's actually a sampler.
A nice collection, but still... a sampler.
Compiled by Ahmet Zappa and Joe Travers.

NICOLAS MEIER - INFINITY

A bit over a year ago, I mentioned the impressive "Chasing Tales" album, a collaboration between Pete Oxley and Nicolas Meier.
16 months later, October 2016, Nicolas Meier is back with a solo album called "Infinity" and I like this one even more.

Nicolas Meier has the ability to intertwine nylon string jazz guitar and world music. The result, "Infinity", is very pleasant to listen to.
Add a superb rhythm section by the name of Vinnie Colaiuta and Jimmy Haslip and you know you can't go wrong.

Take your time to listen to the below interview with Nicolas !
Not only does he talk about the songs on the album, but Nicolas also discusses how he got introduced to Vinnie Colaiuta and to Jimmy Haslip, and how he got a Favored Nations distribution deal.

RUDY TROUVE EXPO

The Rudy Trouvé expo at the cultural centre in Heusden-Zolder (BE) ended a couple of weeks ago.
I was happy to visit it. Beautiful artwork.
Affordable prices as well.
I wanted to take one of the bigger pieces home with me, but the majority of the party did not agree so I took a picture instead.

MAURITS PAUWELS - EEN MOOIE TIJD / STILLE OUDE WERELD

Mauro Pawlowski has recorded a set of songs with Dutch/Flemish lyrics. For the occasion, he changed his name from Mauro Pawlowski to Maurits Pauwels which does indeed have a more Flemish ring to it.
Two songs, 'Een Mooie Tijd' and 'Stille Oude Wereld' have found their way to a 7".
It has been released in a limited and numbered edition of 300 copies and is only available through "2dehand.be", a second-hand website.

SEAHAG - WE'LL GOT TO BE ABOUT DA BIDNUS

Somewhere last year, after a Band From Utopia show, I brought home Robbie 'Seahag' Mangano's "Full Moon Fever", a superb release !
Looking for data for Robbie's discography, I took note of his "We'll Got To Be About Da Bidnus", an album that he had released in 2002.

As it happens, thanks to the inimitable patterns of the internet, I recently found a copy of "We'll Got To Be About...".
The album presents 22 tracks: original (lo-fi) music (plus some sampled voices), with influences that vary from 70's rock music to experimental guitar stuff.
Nice. Very nice.

All this to say that The Band From Utopia is touring again.
In Europe.
Go see them.
And take home Robbie's latest release : "Bumbleweenie".
He might still have a couple of copies of "Full Moon Fever", so buy one of these as well.

For a digital download copy of "Full Moon Fever", try

And while you're at it, check out "We'll Got To Be About Da Bidnus" on iTunes .

Here's a snippet of Robbie with the Band From Utopia.
Recorded in 2012.

THE RESIDENTS - THE DELTA NUDES

  • the residents: the delta nudes
        (2016, cd, austria, klanggalerie)
Before The Residents, there were The Delta Nudes.
These recordings were made in the early seventies and eventually got released as "The Delta Nudes" by Ralph Records in 2013.
This re-release has some bonus material, and it also includes a superb version of Zappa's 'King Kong'.

Wowie Zowie...
Klanggalerie rules.

CHARLES BOBUCK - BOBUCK PLAYS THE RESIDENTS

  • charles bobuck: bobuck plays the residents
        (2016, cd, austria, klanggalerie)
Charles Bobuck has been the composer for The Residents for the last 45 years. He recently quit touring with The Residents, but he's still making music.
The Residents (Randy) (and Nolan Cook) did find a replacement for Chuck as Eric Drew Feldman joined them for their latest tour!!

And now there's "Bobuck Plays The Residents"...
Charles Bobuck's liner notes:
"I have to admit that when Walter Robotka from Klanggalerie first suggested that I record an album of Residents songs, I thought that he was joking considering that I had co-written them. When he said that I should sing the songs, I knew for sure that he was joking. I had never even sung in the shower. I preferred to listen to instrumental music. I always have.

In 2015, Walter released my song collection, THIS, and heard my feeble warbling of 'Never Known Questions'. He said he would like to hear more from me in that stylistic direction.

I lacked confidence that I could make anything that anyone would want to listen to, and asked Walter to act as the voice of reason, a producer, and be brutally honest with me as I sent tests to him.

I think he quickly saw what I was up against, a huge lack of talent, so he started suggesting songs to try from The Residents' vast library that a weak voice could be considered an asset for emoting. Perhaps less singing and more a plea for help.

Over time I started getting into it, I started enjoying singing. Walter said that if I was enjoying myself, that I should stop. It was the lack of comfort, the intangible embarrassment of singing, that gave the recordings their immediacy. That a listener of the album would assume the role of a sadistic voyeur, taking pleasure from hearing me squirm in discomfort.

So here is the result of my squirming for all you sadistic voyeurs.

Charles Bobuck 2016"

Received the album earlier today. It's superb.
Essential listening !!
