AUGUSTO PIRODDA QUARTET - A TURKEY IS BETTER EATEN

Born in Italy in 1971, pianist and composer Augusto Pirodda moved to The Netherlands in 1998 to study at the Den Haag Conservatory. In 2002 he moved back to Italy, only to return to The Netherlands in 2005. Nowadays, he's living in Brussels.

After years of playing with various jazz musicians across Europe, Augusto Pirodda made his first solo record in 2007. The album was entitled "Moving".
2011 saw the release of his second album, "No Comment", with Gary Peacock on bass and Paul Motian on drums. It got released on the German Jazzwerkstatt label.

And now there's "A Turkey Is Better Eaten" for which Augusto invited rhythm section Manolo Cabras on double bass and Marek Patrman on drums. Manolo Cabras hails from Italy and is a long time collaborator of Augusto Pirodda. Czech drummer Marek Patrman teaches at the Antwerp Jazz Academy and has worked and recorded with Erik Vermeulen and Ben Sluys to name two.
Alto sax player Ben Sluys completes the quartet. His lyrical playing style creates the perfect counterpoint to the more experimental approach of Augusto.

"A Turkey Is Better Eaten" is a fascinating album.
Worth checking out.

Released on the El Negocito record label.

Here's Augusto Pirodda, Manolo Cabras and Marke Patrman (without Ben Sluys) in concert in Brussels, November 2011.

FRANK ZAPPA - THE COMPLETE BBC TV BROADCAST

  • frank zappa: the complete bbc tv broadcast
        (2014, 2lp + cd, ??, ??)
Here's another bootleg release. I found this one in July, I think. It's a 2LP set with the music that was broadcast on a recent BBC documentary, if I'm not mistaken.
2LP's: one on blue and one on mauve / lilla / purple vinyl.
As a bonus, the album included a CD entitled "Bamboozled By Circus Krone". I don't get the link with the vinyl album, but that's probably me...
The set was produced in a limited edition of 300 numbered copies.

ZAPPA / MOTHERS - ROXY BY PROXY

As far as I know, the "Roxy By Proxy" album by three different parties: by the ZFT, by Mark Logan, and by 'Dal Vivo'. The latter one did not only produce a standard jewelcase edition, but also a version that came in a 10" cardboard booklet. Nice. Very nice.

There's also a 2 LP vinyl bootleg version. Two to be exact. One on green vinyl and a second one on red vinyl.
Predictable and illegal.

Here they are:

Limited edition on DVDR.

Saturday, July something 2014, Jazzprojekt Hundehagen opened another day of Zappanale delights.

Somehow, I wasn't convinced. I prefer the guys playing instrumental stuff, mixing Zappa with other fusion standards.
Still, it got me in the right mood and that's what counts.

Just to make me drool, I received the setlist of the concert that the Wofo Sextette did at the Plusetage in Baarle Nassau, a couple of months ago. A concert that I missed due to a temporary malfunctioning memory. Shame on me.

FOLLIA!

Belgium-based band Follia! combines folk and jazz.
They released their first album in 2004 and a second one in 2006.
A couple of months ago, a new album came out.

Follia! is a project by Johan and Pieter Decancq and by Sammy Lee Daese.
A bagpipe ! And flutes. "Kiss Me You Fool!" is a nice surprise and an excellent introduction to Follia!.
"Contemporary Belgian/Flemish folk(rock) performed on bagpipes, diatonic accordion, tamborine, violin; flutes, schalmei, piano, electric guitar, bass, percussion and drums."

Follia!'s second album, "Grasshopper" is a cheerful successor to "Kiss Me You Fool!".
Catchy melodies, beautiful arrangements and a nice groove.
The album features Humble Gabor Vörös (Humble Grumble) on the guitar.

Follia!'s latest (and eponymous) album not only looks great but it sounds great as well. Rich sounds and arrangements, very melodic, highly varied.
The line-up has slightly changed. The new line-up features Indra Boone on vocals and Nicolaas Cottenie on violin.
Produced by Humble Gabor Vörös, who also takes care of the guitar parts.
There are more Humble Grumble links with Houni Isoherranen on bass and special guests Megan Quill and Liesbeth Verlaet on 'Dabba Dabba'.

Very nice.
VERY nice.

Posted on Soundcloud.
On December 17, 2014.
by The Rose Vortex

This track is called 'Muckin' Fusstache/Guess What'

with one line of lyrics, which are:
'wasn't frank zappa the guy with the coolest muckin' fusstache ever?' yeah, that's in 9 of course.
'guess what' has quotes from, you know what. anyway,
everybody plays their asses off and it was at the end of a very long day of recording.
what a smoking lineup! on that note:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRANK!!!!!
the world loves. respects and MISSES YOU!

MORGAN ÅGREN - BATTERIE DELUXE

I have been listening to Morgan Ågren's various musical projects for quite some years. Ever since his appearance at a 1988 Frank Zappa concert, the participation to the Zappa's Universe concerts, and his contribution to two tracks of Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa's "Shampoo Horn" (not to mention the Zapp-Stee-Toot project).
From the early  ninetees to today, it has been a fascinating journey with the Mats/Morgan albums as recurring highlights.

And now there's "Batterie Deluxe", Morgan Ågren's first solo album.
14 tracks,
50 minutes,
and a fine selection of guests.

On "Batterie Deluxe", Morgan takes us on a voyage of discovery. A journey through his world of sounds and it's an amazing one.

Next to the inimitable Mats Öberg on keyboard and the fascinating Indian sounds of Neyveli Radhakrishna's electric violin, the album features Simon Steensland, Fredrik Thordendal, Jimmy Ågren and Devin Townsend next to Mamadou Sene

Fascinating.
Highly recommended.
Essential listening.

THE RESIDENTS & RENALDO AND THE LOAF

A reissue of "Title In Limbo",
over at Klang Galerie.

THE RESIDENTS AND RENALDO & THE LOAF Title In Limbo

CD album in a limited edition of 700 copies. | gg200
The fourth step in our Renaldo re-issue programme and this time we have a very special item for you: Title In Limbo is an album that was recorded with The Residents in San Francisco in 1981.The bands played a very experimental jam session together and went back to these recordings 2 years later, in 1983. Title In Limbo finally came out in November of that year on vinyl. 1998 saw the first complete CD release as a numbered limited edition on Ralph America, copies of which are scarce and now collectors’ items. But that CD differed from the vinyl in that some tracks had short fade ups applied to them which did not truly reflect the original release. So we are excited for the first time on CD to now offer this album re-mastered with all tracks fully restored to their originally recorded states. Also included is a booklet with rare photographs and of course the lyrics for all the songs. In this case, all Klanggalerie can say to you is: Buy or die.

BACKBACK - BACKBACK III

We are being spoiled.
Next to the excellent Manngold De Cobre debut album and Dans Dans' superb third release, here's another must-hear band from Belgium.
BackBack is trio that features Marc De Maeseneer on baritone and tenor saxophone; Giovanni Barcella on drums and korg, and Filip Wauters on electric guitar, baritone guitar and lapsteel.

As the album title predicts, "BackBack III" is indeed the band's third release. It presents nine powerful compositions. Exhilarating. Wringing. Angular. It makes me want more.
