BEEFHEART - BAT CHAIN PULLER

Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band recorded"Bat Chain Puller" in 1976, shortly after a European tour. Both Bruce Fowler and Elliot Ingber left the Magic Band, so replacements had to be made and John French and Denny Walley were joined by Jeff Moris Tepper who would take on the guitar duties (he was a former neighbour of Don Van Vliet) and John Thomas who would be playing keyboard bass.
Unfortunately, shortly after the recording, label owners Frank Zappa and Herb Cohen got into a dispute and Cohen had all of Zappa's equipment and archived recordings confiscated, including the Bat Chain Puller master tape.
Zappa and Cohen went to court and Zappa did win the case. In 1982. So the Bat Chain Puller master tapes came back to surface some six years after the recording session.
In the meantime, Beefheart had already re-recorded most of the material with a different band for "Shiny Beast". The result was that the original master recording got stored in the Zappa Vault.

However, shortly after the recording of BCP a demo tape of the album had been sent to a couple of journalists for review purposes. Copies of the tape made it to the fans, and eventually bootlegs of the album turned up as well.

Last month, the Zappa Family Trust released "Bat Chain Puller" on CD. The original album plus some bonus tracks.
I've always had a soft spot for "Shiny Beast" and for the original "Bat Chain Puller" recordings.
Listening to BCP only makes these feelings stronger.
It's a joy to hear the original recordings in a superb audio quality.
I have been playing BCP for three days in a row, and all that I can say is that it has become my favorite Beefheart album.

ESSENTIAL LISTENING !!

DWEEZIL ZAPPA - F.O.H.

Dweezil Zappa's "Front Of House" album arrived last week. If I understand it correctly,"Front Of House" means that the recordings on this discs are from the mixing board. No multi-channel tweeking.
"F.O.H." includes material from the Zappa Plays Zappa tours from 2007 untill 2011. I know that a lot of fans are quite frustrated by the recent ZFT clean-up on YouTube, but that does not make this a less good album. Actually, it's pretty impressive. I like the sound of the front-of-house-mix, and the performance of the band is excellent.
It's a good-looking package as well: a 2CD fold-out set, with beautiful Cal Schenkel artwork.
The only minor thing is the price, which Dweezil addresses in the liner notes saying that illegal downloads makes putting out CDs less profitable.

Pricey, but highly recommended.

AKA MOON - AKASHA VOL.2

Aka Moon will be doing a couple of concerts next month. I will see them at De Singer in Rijkevorsel (B) on 21/4, and also at 'De Casino' in Sint Niklaas (B) on 26/4.
I saw the band live for the first time only a couple of years ago, and it was absolutely breathtaking. One of the best gigs that I ever saw. And I've seen a few.

Fabrizio Cassol (sax), Michel Hatzigeorgiou (bass) and Stéphane Galland (drums) are top. If you want to catch a fine jazz concert, you know where to go.

To get in the mood, I pulled out "Akasha Vol.2", their 1996 album (and added the cover & other data to the United Mutations Archives). Recorded in 1995 in India with three local musicians, the album continues where "Vol.1" ended.
World music jazz? Whatever one might call it, I love it.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - DE LAATSTE PLAAT VOLUME 2

Volume two of "De Laatste Plaat" got released earlier this week. Again, the CD was only available with weekly tv-mag Humo, but I was told that all the tracks are available as (iTunes?) download as well.
Songs that you might / shouldknow from Soulwax, Tim Van Hamel, Mauro Pawlowski, TC Matic and other belgian bands, are covered by Sam Vloemans, The Zita Swoon Group, The Brussels Philharmonic and others.
Good thinking by Woestijnvis, who not only produced the show during which these tracks were recorded, but who also owns Humo.
Unfortunately, this is the final volume. I only hope that there will be more projects like this.

THE CNDM PERFORMED ZAPPA

Last October I mentioned that the CNDM ensemble would be performing Zappa's arrangement of Ravel's 'Bolero' and various other Zappa pieces in concert in Madrid on October 4, 2011.

The concert got broadcast on TV, and you can watch the complete show over here:

LAST SHOP STANDING

Last Shop Standing is a collaboration between award winning feature film company Blue Hippo Media www.bluehippomedia.com and Proper Music Publishing Ltd.

Based on the successful book by Graham Jones of the same name, "Last Shop Standing" will be a 60-minute documentary to be released in the summer of 2012. It will be a celebration of the unique spirit of comradeship and entrepreneurial ingenuity that has enabled so many shops to keep operating successfully against the backdrop of massive changes in the music industry, the biggest recession in years, the growth of online file sharing, and the explosion of choice in music consumption.

Did you know…

Not long ago there was a record shop on every high street, but over 500 independent record stores have closed during the last few years.
But record shops were always more than retail outlets. They are part of our culture; they support new bands and local talent. A place for musicians and music fans to congregate, to browse away a few hours, to walk away with music they didn't know existed.

LISA MEZZACAPPA & NIGHTSHADE - COSMIC RIFT

"Cosmic Rift" is Lisa Mezzacappa's latest album. The Nightshade band was born when she was asked to respond to visual art in a musical way for a 2009 concert series. Beside the three pieces that were created for the visual art project, the album also includes a piece by Messiaen, and a fine, expanded version of Frank Zappa's 'The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue'.
Worth checking out.

Out on Leo Records.

KINGS OF BELGIUM - TRES FORT

Kings Of Belgium is a belgian trio that consists of Gil Mortio (guitar), Pierre Vervloesem (bass) and an invited drummer. On "Unchained Melodies", it was Al Battor who took drummer duties, on "Très Fort", it's Morgan Ågren.

"Très Fort" got recorded in Sweden over at Morgan's studio. It's hard to believe that they pulled this off in two days. And it's even harder to believe that most of the music on this album was improvised. This is great stuff.
Melodic, up-tempo, excellent interaction & fine improvisations. I love it.

Highly recommended.

"Très Fort" is a great album and the album title is well-chosen as the music is very energetic, very powerful. Morgan Ågren is the perfect drummer for the Gil Mortio / Pierre Vervloesem tandem. I can only hope that I will be able to see this power trio in concert one day.

CUCAMONGA - ALTER HUEVO

Cucamonga is a progressive jazz / rock quintet from Argentina. It's also the place where Frank Zappa once had his 'Studio Z'.
The influence is obvious. Excellent.

Out on the italian Altrock label.

Do check this out !!

Listen to 'Tetascotch' and find the Zappa-quotation:

GARY HUSBAND - DIRTY & BEAUTIFUL VOL 2

For his "Dirty & Beautiful Vol.2" project, Gary Husband invited a fine selection of supeb fusion musicians: Alex Machacek, Allan Holdsworth, John McLauglin, Mike Stern, ...
The result is an excellent album.
Sure, it's not like it's one band that's perfoming, so it's more like a collection of tracks than a real album, but the result is great.
I know that I mentioned this album a couple of weeks ago, when I found out about it, but it has been in and out of my CD-player ever since.

Jazz-rock / Fusion fans will love this.

TRIGGERFINGER TO PERFORM AT ZAPPANALE

Old news for some, but Tringerfinger will be performing at the next Zappanale.
Here's a nice recording from their 2010 Lowlands concert, with Selah Sue guesting on vocals...
Goosebumps (& Earplugs).

VARIOUS ARTISTS - DE LAATSTE PLAAT VOLUME 1

Earlier this week, belgian radio & tv magazine Humo included a CD.
"De Laatste Plaat - Volume 1" collects recordings from various bands that performed during "De Laatste Show", a late night belgian tv show.
And it's not just a random collection as each of the participating bands was told to perform a song from the belgian pop scene.
It's a nice collection (and it's also volume one) that not only includes Jef Neve's excellent rendition of dEUS' 'Suds & Soda', but also a coverversion of my favourite song in the dutch language: Dez Mona performs 'Van God Los', a track that was originally recorded by Monza, and that translates into something as 'Let Go Of Your God'.

Here's the Jef Neve Trio (with Teun Verbruggen on drums !)

JOHN TRUBEE'S LOVE POEM FOR TODAY

LOVE POEM FOR TODAY Copyright©2012 John Trubee

Everyone is in a great deal of pain.

Everyone is suffering and struggling.

Everyone is dying to obtain things from others who, with malice and stupidity or through neglect, deny them.

No one understands anyone else.

No one listens to anyone else.

Everyone is hypersensitive, poised to lash out at the slightest imagined insult.

Everyone has lost their sense of humor.

Everyone chooses to copulate in a love relationship with the least intelligent, most obnoxious fool they can find—so they can have someone to complain about to everyone else.

Everyone’s child is a genius who ends up being paid to clean toilets in gas stations.

Everyone wants to be the boss while they constantly weasel out of work.

Everybody is a star, but nobody deserves it.

Everyone declaims utter confidence and absolute certainty based on zero facts, no information, abysmal incuriosity, and aversion to reading.

Everyone is trying to convince the starving child that the bread for which he hungers is poisonous. Everyone prohibits sex to the already sex-starved.

Everyone is blind with madness, picking fights for no reason.

The people in charge are bullies and lying hypocrites. The people beneath them resent them and want to kill them.

Everyone screeches about freedom of choice when all the choices are equally rotten, dismal, and disgusting, rendering such freedom absurd.

Everyone boasts about freedom not being free, and then petulantly whines about having to pay taxes to ensure and maintain such freedom.

FRANK VINCENT ZAPPA - THE INTERVIEW

  • frank zappa: the interview
    (1991, cdr, ger, arf society)

Here's another odditie. This CDR , entitled "The Interview", includes a Zappa interview by Michael Heinze from July 30, 1990.
It's a nice little disc that could be read on both PC and Macintosh. My best guess is that it got released in 1990. It's an audio-only thing that you can browse by means of buttons. Quite nice, but a bit out-of-date compared to today's standards.
Did I mention that it got released by The Arf Society? A fine collaboration.

ELTON DEAN'S NINESENSE

The Canadian Reel Recordings record label has issued a 2CD set of Elton Dean's Ninesense.

"For the many friends and fans of the late saxophonist and composer Elton Dean, this poignant 2CD release is the debut presentation of a complete concert performance from Elton's ensemble of Brit-jazz firebrands known as Ninesense. Elton Dean was a consummate musician, widely-recognized for his indelible sound and serpentine solos on alto sax and saxello. "

ANOTHER ZAPPA FESTIVAL SCHEDULED IN NORWAY

LISA MEZZACAPPA' BAIT & SWITCH - WHAT IS KNOWN

I received a message from Brainpang in which he mentioned that Lisa Mezzacappa had released two albums that should interest me & the readers of U.M.

Lisa Mezzacappa is a San Francisco-based double bass player and composer. Her influences range from Henry Threadgill, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Eric Dolphy, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman and Rahsaan Roland Kirk to Sun Ra.
For her first solo album, "What Is Known", Lisa recorded a fine version of Don Van Vliet's 'Lick My Decals Off, Baby'.

This is fabulous. I love it. And I'm not just talking about the excellent Beefheart coverversion. No, I'm talking about the entire album.
If you're in to adventurous jazz and improvised music, you will love this. I know I do.

ZFT & YOUTUBE

Multiple copyright complaints from the ZFT towards a YouTube uploader results in the uploader's account being deleted.
This means that not only the nice little movies of bands that perform FZ's music (or even holiday movies with an FZ-soundtrack) are disappearing, but all the other little movies from the uploaders in question will be gone as well.
Aaaarghh....!!

EVIL DICK & THE BANNED MEMBERS - AUTHORISED BOOTLEG 2011

Evil Dick & The Banned Members performed at Zappanale 2011. Actually, they performed twice: at the truckstage before the actual festival, and at the big stage at/during the festival.
Evil Dick has brought this "Authorised Bootleg" along. It contains recordings of two gigs that the band had done in 2011. The weird thing about it is that some of the songs (well, actually most of the songs) got played at both gigs, so you get them twice.
Anyway. This is fun. I wanted to call it zappa-esque, but it seems that the ZFT is scanning the web for FZ-references, so I'd better call it mother-esque.
Fun. Capital F.

THE YELLOW SNOW CRYSTALS - ZAPPN'

Here's another title for the Others Of Invention series: bands playing the music of Frank Zappa: The Yellow Snow Crystals with "Zappn'".
The disc got released last year. July or August.
The YSC made a remarkable appearance at MOSAE last year, were enjoyed by many at last year's Zappanale, and will be back at Zappanale next August.

Jazz, improvisations and Zappa. These guys know the secret formula...

LEXOLO - BON VIVANT

Lexolo is Lex Kemper's alias, and it does have a nice ring to it means that Lex is performing solo: Lexolo.
I know Lex as he used to play the guitar for The Foolz, a Dutch Zappa coverband. In 2009, Lex quit The Foolz to persue other projects. In the meantime, The Foolz have recovered and Lex is doing fine as well.

"Bon Vivant" is Lex's first solo album. It presents 12 beautiful acoustic guitar pieces. The disc includes a couple of Antonio Carlos Jobim tunes, a fine Django Rheinhardt composition, a few seventies classic (The Kinks, Randy Newman, The Bee Gees) and some Zappa material.

  • birmingham (randy newman)

  • your song (elton john)

  • desafinado (antonio carlos jobim)

  • sofa (frank zappa)

  • georgia on my mind (ray charles)

  • how deep is your love (brothers gibb)

  • let's make the water turn black (frank zappa)

  • manoir de mes rèves (django rheinhardt)

  • sunny afternoon (ray davies)

  • a felicidade (antonio carlos jobim)

  • misirlou (traditional)

  • sleep dirt (frank zappa)

I'm quite impressed. If you're into acoustic bossa nova / nylon jazz guitar, you'll like this.
"Bon Vivant" is an impressive showcase.
Lex performs live on a regular basis at various pubs in Apeldoorn, NL, so if you're in the neighbourhood, you should check his concert schedule.

Check out the demos and contact Lex to order this album through his website:

SUN RA - THE ETERNAL MYTH REVEALED VOL.1

Last year, Michael Anderson, the curator of the Sun Ra Music Archive, teamed up with the Transparency record label to release the first part of an in-depht study of the music of Sun Ra.

The result, and this is just part 1, is an astounding set of 14 CDs, housed in a nice box, and accompanied by a book.

When I first heard about this project, I was wondering what it could be or what it could become. It is only after listening to a couple of discs that I understood the enormous amount of work and dedication (both from Michael Anderson and from Transparency) that has been put into this publication.
"The Eternal Myth Revealed" is presented as an audio documentary. Michael Anderson not just talks about all of Sun Ra's various projects and recordings in a chronical way, he also presents all of the available material.
The first ten discs include material that has Sun Ra as a pianist, a composer and and as an arranger, all pre-dating the Arkestra days. From disc eleven on, the Arkestra enters the stage.

As I said, the box includes all of the available recordings. This means that if there are four takes of a certain tune, that you get all of those four takes, one after another. So you get a pretty impressive collection of audio tracks, but presented in a scientifical, chronological way.
In between the audio tracks and Michael's comments, there's also lots of snippets of interviews to be found.

"The Eternal Myth Revealed" is an unbelievable collection of Sun Ra material. The only disadvantage is that you can not listen to it as a studio album or as a live concert, and that might be disappointing to some. On the other hand, it's part one of the ultimate Sun Ra audio documentary.

YOUTUBE

If you want to catch some Zappa on YouTube, you'd better hurry.

People that have posted Zappa related material on YouTube are getting messages from Big Brother:

"We have received copyright complaint(s) regarding material that you posted, as follows:... from Zappa Family Trust about ..."

VAN DYKE PARKS

Van Dyke Parks was part of The Mothers fir a very short time (pre-"Freak Out"). He did play with various Zappa alumni afterwards, and his compositions were performed by Jimmy Carl Black, among others.
Last year the Bananastan label released 6 singles by Van Dyke. I can't tell you anything about the music, but the artwork is stunning.
Here are some covers & back-covers of the series.
