KIMONO DRAGGIN' UPDATE

Wednesday, May 4, 2011, Kimono Draggin' will be performing at the 'Bar' at Crown Street, New Haven at 9 pm.

And here's the new video from the forthcoming LP "Kimono Gold".

CPEX - OLRAAIT!

CPeX, or the Clement Peerens Explosition is a belgian pastiche rock band.
Clement Peerens was a character (performed by Hugo Matthysen) on Flemisch radio show "Het Leugenpaleis". Each week, Clement gave his opinion (in a Flemish (Antwerp) dialect) on various topisc of the pop and rock music scene.

With CPeX, Hugo Matthysen (as Clement Peerens), Aram van Ballaert (as Dave de Peuter) and Ronny Mosuse (as Sylvain Aertbeliën) bring an hilarious parody. Familiar sounding riffs and melodies (AC/DC, The Beatles, Hendrix, ...) are combined with lyrics about the most silly subjects (including a lot of macho blah blah), all sung in an Antwerp dialect.

You have to understand Dutch to fully appreciate it. Fun.

SUN RA - THE ETERNAL MYTH REVEALED * * UPDATE * *

A newsflash from Transparency

Part One of 'The Eternal Myth Revealed' will be at the CD pressing plant and
book printer/binder in two weeks -- and I have recently been told that the
album will be about TWENTY CDs (rather than the previously estimated fourteen
discs).*

NEW SUN RA DVD ANNOUNCED

from the saturn newsgroup

A new Sun Ra DVD got announced on Amazon: "Jazz Session".
Might be a Transparency release.

'Master quality French television broadcast from 1972, 31 minutes total. This black and white portrait of the Arkestra is startlingly beautiful, and is possibly the single finest film of the band ever seen. This even surpasses ""Space Is The Place"" in its details of how this tribe conjures the purest magic of costumes, percussion and joyous science fiction truth. Recorded on a momentary stop in France (Jan.8, 1972) on their way back to Oakland after the Autumn/Winter 1971 European and Egypt tours, this flawless video recording has never been seen by even the most hardcore Sun Ra collectors and discographers.'

HKA - ZAPPA

Hard-to-find, you say? Well, that's putting it mildly.

In 1997, the students of the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem (Highschool of the Arts from Arnhem, NL) did a couple of concerts as part of a Zappa Project.

Recordings of the Nijmegen (1996/10) and the Arnhem (1996/11) concerts found their way to a promotional CD.

Pretty good stuff and a nice addition to the Others Of Invention section over at the United Mutations Archives. Check the link for line-up & tracklist.

YUMI HARA CAWKWELL & SATO YUKIE - RIDE A WHITE RABBIT

I received this nice a little while ago. Even before the earthquake / tsunami / nuclear disaster in Japan.

On "Ride A White Rabbit" Yumi Hara Cawkwell (on keyboard and vocals) teams up with Sato Yukie (on guitar). The result is an album with seven psycheledic, improvised tracks, with the last track, 'Clinging Bogy' clocking in at almost 19 minutes.

The album title refers to T-Rex' "Ride A White Swan" and Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit". Add to this that the Super-Hakuto express train plays an important role in today's Japan (Hakuto = white rabbit) and that 2011 is the year of the rabbit, and you will understand that this is not a random album title.

Listening to the music on this album, is like entering another world. Improvised, avant-garde music gets combined with Yumi Hara's psychedelic sounding vocals. Intriguing to say the least.

COPERNICUS - CIPHER AND DECIPHER

Copernicus is back with a new album.

On “Cipher And Decipher” performance poet Copernicus (real name Joseph Smalkoswski) continues to explain his view upon the the universe. In Copernicus’ world, everything we see and hear is fake. It’s all an illusion. The only world only exists on the subatomic level, as everything is made up out of 12 subatomic particles.

Copernicus rants that matter is energy, that the force of gravity can be felt throughout the universe, and that matter can become mind.

Supporting Copernicus in his statements, is a group of improvising musicians. Moving between soundscapes and improvisations around returning patterns, the music that accompanies Copernicus’ poems complements that total package.

I’ve said it before, and I am happy to repeat it:This is art.

I love it.

Out on the MoonJune record label.

ANT-BEE - ELECTRONIC CHURCH MUZIC

Okay, boys and girls. It looks like a sunny Sunday afternoon (central yuripean time) from where I'm typing this, so there's no reason to withhold this gem any longer.

After years of hard work, the Ant-Bee has finally released "Electronic Church Music". "ECM" is a contemporary mix of psychelic, progressive and Mother-esque music. The album features an unbelievable list of guest musicians (stay with me !!): former Mothers Don Preston, Jimmy Carl Black, Motorhead Sherwood, Bunk and Buzz Gardner and Napoleon Murphy Brock; Soft Machine and Gong's Gilli Smyth and Daevid Allen; Alice Cooper Group's Michael Bruce; Yes guitar player Peter Banks; former Magic Band members Zoot Horn Rollo and Rockette Morton; italian writer and musician Alessandro Pizzin; Focus guitar player and icon Jan Akkerman; German progressive rock multi instrumentalist Peter Frohmader; the late Bruce Cameron and also Moogy Klingman from Todd Rundgren's band.

The music, my friends, is as breathtaking as the above list suggests. A lot of the songs were composed by the participating musicians. Other tunes make the mysterious puzzle even more complete. Napoleon Murphy Brock, for instance, sings Todd Rundgren's 'Don't You Ever Learn?'. Add to all this some church organs, psalms, whispering voices and monk choirs and you know what to expect.

As the album title and the cover art suggest, the Ant-Bee offers us a the bible / songbook of the Electronic Church. Praise the Ant-Bee. I love it.

Brilliant.

The album is available from Barking Moondog Records. Don't hesitate!

CONTINUUM

Continuum is a quartet that performs contemporary improvisational music. On the 2000 "Passages" album, the line-up looked like this:

  • Steve Billman - 4 String fretted and fretless basses, 6 string fretted bass

  • Paul Carman - soprano, alto, tenor saxophones

  • Christopher Garcia - drumset, talba, olla, Paiste cymbals, electronic percussion

  • Craig Ochikubo - keyboard synthesizers

More recently, the quartet's line-up looked like this:

  • Christopher Garcia - drumset, tabla, kanjira, olla, Paiste Cymbals, percussion

  • Alfred Garcia - electric fretted and fretless bass guitar

  • Craig Ochikubo - keyboard synthesizers, piano

  • Damon Zick - soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, & tenor saxophone

The band has released three albums. "You Tell Me" (1991), "Continuum" (1995) and "Passages" (2000). The latter two include pieces by John Bergamo, and "Passages" featured Paul Carman (who performed saxophone in Zappa's 1988 band).

Christopher Garcia, as you should now, is part of the Grande Mothers Re:Invented, and is the man behind the Quarteto Nuevo.

BRYAN BELLER - WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIVE

Bryan Beller's "Wednesday Night Live" arrived at the U.M.Headquarters about two weeks ago. After "View" in 2003, and "Thanks In Advance" in 2008, "Wednesday Night Live" is Bryan Beller's third solo release.

Besides the two 'bonus tracks', the majority of this album got recorded live in concert at the 'Baked Potato' in L.A. in 2010. At that time, the Bryan Beller Band consisted of Rick Musallam (guitar), Joe Travers (drums), Mike Keneally (keyboard and occasional impossible guitar), Bryan Beller (bass) and Griff Peters (guitar).

The result is fabulous. The band is in top shape and the songs that made it to this album are among my favourite BB compositions. "Wednesday Night Live" combines excellent musicianship and improvisational talents with superb, melodic compositions.

Highly Recommended !!

SONGS FROM A BAD HAT

Ten years ago, Mauro Pawlowski released "Songs From A Bad Hat".

I added data and pictures of this album (and the singles) to the United Mutations Archives. Mauro was part of the Evil Superstars. In more recent years, he's been playing guitar in dEUS.

So here's my tip to the songs from a bad hat.

OSTBAHN-KURTI - BERTL BRAUN

I told you a little while ago tht the Ostbahn-Kurti single "Bertl Braun" (a German coverversion of Zappa's 'Bobby Brown') was made with two different CD covers.

TODD GRUBBS - RETURN OF THE WORM

Guitar virtuoso Todd Grubbs has a new album out! It's called "Return Of The Worm" and it rocks.

You might have heard of Todd Grubbs as he has contributed to the two Zappa tribute albums that Andrew Greenaway put together for Cordelia Records. For "20 Extraordinary Renditions", Todd Grubbs (and Bo Smith) contributed his version of Zappa's 'The Idiot Bastard Son', and for "21 Burnt Weeny Sandwiches" the Todd Brubbs Group (and Ant-Bee) recorded 'Themes From Burnt Weeny Sandwich'.

In the same vain, "Return Of The Worm" does not make concessions. This is a great album. It's funny, it has some great rock tunes and includes a couple of zappa-esque surprises as well. Todd adds:

“My new CD is a little different than my previous few releases,” explains Todd, “although it really may be more of a progression in being truer to myself. I really have gotten to the point where I am creating my music without any consideration of what others might think, or what I think others might think. Don't get me wrong, this is still a crazy guitar CD with tons of varied guitars flying around, but I had a lot of fun with the addition of 'field recordings'; a group of interesting recordings that I have made over the years and then I have built compositions around them or interjected them into preexisting songs. That was definitely the best time I have ever had making a CD and I am excited about continuing in this direction.”

Icing on the cake are contributions by Mike Keneally and Jerry Outlaw!! Love it.

RAZL - MICROSCOPIC

Congratulations are in place as guitar player and composer Razl has just released his new album. Razl, real name Raúl Hulves, was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1973. "Microscopic" is his second solo album. His first one, "Rotonova", got released in 2008 and featured guest appearances by Mike Keneally and Bryan Beller.

On "Microscopic", Razl presents 9 instrumental tracks, performed by the Razl / Bryan Beller (bass) / Pepe Acebal (drums) trio.

This is playful rock - music with a lot of jazz influences. Call it fusion if you will. Very nice. Very nice indeed.

After listening to "Microscopic", it didn't surprise me when I read that Razl mentions Zappa & The Mothers, Gentle Giant and King Crimson as important influences. Add a dose of joyfulness, concentrate it to a trio, and you get "Microscopic".

I'm glad that I got to hear this. An excellent discovery. Great music for happy people.

Last year, he composed "48 Fugues For Frank" as a hommage to the life and work of Frank Zappa. It was premiered during the "Mona Foma Festival of Music and Art 2010" (curated by Brian Ritchie) at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, The Bond Store in Hobart on 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 January 2010.

March 2010, the pieces got recorded at the Move Records studio. They got released on CD later the same year.

This is not the easiest album to find. It took me quite some time to track it down after I had read Andrew's (Idiot Bastard) review. To be honest, I do like the album, but I wouldn't be able to tell where to find the Zappa influences...

BRYAN BELLER - VIEW

Today, adding data and pictures of albums that are worth your attention, brings me to Bryan Beller's debut album.

Released in 2003, "View" still sounds as good as the first time that I heard it. At the time, I had received a CDR-copy from a friend who thought that I needed to hear it. Needless to say that I replaced the CDR-copy with the real album in the meantime.

There are some fine compositions on this disc, and the album features a bunch of excellent musicians as well, including Mike Keneally and Joe Travers.
Quirky rock / progressive rock fans will like this.

MIKE KENEALLY WEBCAST 2011 04 14

Mike Keneally says:

We had so much fun webcasting from the studio a couple of weeks ago, we would like to do it again. Sorry for the short notice, but this Thursday April 14 at 12 noon Pacific time, The Mike Keneally Show - In The Studio at Chatfield Manor will be on the air.

On this episode I believe I would like to continue work on the same two songs I was working on in the last webcast, "Raining Here Inside" and "Pitch Pipe." I thought those of you who checked out the last show might like to continue to look in on those particular songs' development. Oh if you didn't know you should, that all our Ustream webcasts are archived at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/mike-keneally.

NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK - THIS IS WHAT FRANK ZAPPA HEARD

Everybody knows, or should know, that Frank Zappa discovered one of his top musicians at a concert in Hawaii. In 1973, Napoleon Murphy Brock was performing with Communication Plus at the 'Red Noodle' club in Hawaii. Zappa spotted him, was impressed, and asked him to join The Mothers.

Napoleon did join, and together with George Duke, Ruth Underwood, Chester Thompson, Tom and Bruce Fowler, Zappa made some of his finest albums.

40 years later, Napoleon is giving us a glimpse of what Communication Plus was all about. We get to hear what Zappa was so impressed about. Sure, we all know about NMB's musicianship and his stage presence, but listening to this album does have a couple of nice surprises.

This is funk. Pure funk. Party music. Not the best audio quality, but that's OK. This is a historical document.

Available through Napoleon's website.

MIKE KENEALLY UPDATE

Mike Keneally is preparing a new CD/DVD: "Bakin' @ The Potato".

To celebrate this, the band will be performing at the 'Baked Potato' in North Hollywood on Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4, 2011.

Scott adds:

Here's where we could use your help-- it's entirely possible that the MKB/BBB show could expand into a short tour up the west coast after the two Potato concerts, through San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, and any locale on on the way. We're working on some ideas now, but time is short, so any suggestions or connections you have along this proposed route might come in handy right about now. If you have a usable lead about cool west coast places to play in early June, please email us at "mkb at keneally dot com". Operator is standing by!

DON PRESTON'S AKASHIC ENSEMBLE - TETRAGRAMMATON

After the Grande Mothers concert in Weert, NL, I was able to find another excellent Brain Records release. Brain Records is Don Preston's private label. On this label, he has released music by various projects: solo, the Don & Bunk Show, the Grandmothers, and, yes, also the Akashic Ensemble.

Besides Don, the Akashic Ensemble featured Andre Cholmondeley (from Project/Object fame) on guitar, and the late Cheri Josne on percussion. This is the real stuff. It's funny, it has some great music (with some excellent improvisations), and there's some Zappa tunes on it as well. My guess is that this release dates from 2004 (the label says Brain Records BR014), but I could, of course, be wrong. I you're able to find it, don't hesitate!

    QUARTETO NUEVO - S/T

Quarteto Nuevo was founded in 2001 by percussionist Christopher Garcia. The Quartet Nuevo recorded Frank Zappa's 'T'Mershi Duween' and released it on their eponymous album in 2010. I like it. It's a fine coverversion on a nice album. A mixture between world music and jazz. Nice.

    • Jacob Szekely: cellos

    • Kenton Youngstrom: acoustic guitar

    • Damon Zick: soprano sax, alto flute

    GLEN DROVER

Ex-Megadeth's Glen Drover recorded a Jean-Luc Ponty piece and two Zappa pieces on his "Metalusion" album. ('The Purple Lagoon' & 'Filthy Habits')

added info: the album contains 10 pieces, 5 of them are cover tunes. Actually there
are 2 Ponty coverversions: "Don't let the world pass you by" and "Mirage". And there's also a coverversion of Al Di Meola's "Egyptian Danza".

    ESSRA MOHAWK AT ZAPPANALE !!

    The Zappanale info sheet

    2011 04

Essra Mohawk - the first! - the only one! - the real Uncle Meat!

Singer/songwriter Essra Mohawk (b. Sandra Elayne Hurvitz, Philadelphia, PA) is a performing songwriter and recording artist whose career encompasses a who's who of popular music. In addition to releasing several critically acclaimed solo albums, she has collaborated with Al Jarreau, Bonnie Bramlett, Al Stewart, Narada Michael Walden, and Keb' Mo'; provided background vocals for John Mellencamp, Jerry Garcia, and Kool & the Gang; and written songs for Cyndi Lauper and Tina Turner.

Liberty Records released her first single, "The Boy with the Way" under the name Jamie Carter when she was 16. She later declined several offers of staff writerships, although the Shangri-Las and Vanilla Fudge began recording her material.

In 1967, Mohawk met Frank Zappa, who, after hearing her sing and play for the first time, immediately asked her to join the Mothers of Invention! He later gave her the name Uncle Meat, a moniker she assumed reluctantly. During this period she opened to Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Grateful Dead, Procol Harum and many other notable 60's artists. Essra was the first artist signed to Zappa's Bizarre label (a Verve subsidiary). Her first album, Sandy's Album Is Here at Last!, appeared soon after and remains the only album released under her birth name. It was during this period that a friend began calling her "Essie," a nickname that quickly morphed into "Essra." In 1969 she married Frazier Mohawk, the producer of her second album, who had worked on Nico's Marble Index. Their working relationship spawned Primordial Lovers, hailed in Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 25 best albums ever made . It missed out on receiving wider publicity at the time of its release, but gradually developed a strong following over the ensuing decades.

Further interest in Mohawk's music was prompted in the mid-'70s by her appearance on Schoolhouse Rock, the popular educational and musical cartoon TV series. Her vocals were featured on "Interjections," "Sufferin' Till Suffrage," and "Mother Necessity." In 1974, Mohawk moved to the Elektra/Asylum label, where she released Essra Mohawk. The album should, by rights, have consolidated her position in the first league of singer/songwriters, but was insufficiently publicized and distributed, despite its positive reviews. Two years later, the same fate greeted her fourth album, Essra, which appeared on Private Stock.

Meanwhile, Mohawk's reputation in musical circles was such that from 1980 to 1982 she performed as a background vocalist with the Jerry Garcia Band after narrowly missing out on joining Jefferson Starship following Grace Slick's departure in 1978.

After recording two solo albums Burnin' Shinin' and E-Turn on indy labels in the 80's, Mohawk enjoyed a huge hit as the songwriter of Cyndi Lauper's Billboard number three hit "Change of Heart," from Lauper's double platinum-selling True Colors album. Later in that decade Tina Turner recorded "Stronger Than the Wind," again penned by Mohawk. In '92 one of her songs found its way onto a major country album, Something in Red by Lorrie Morgan. The album went double platinum.

After moving to Nashville, Mohawk recorded the albums Raindance and Essie Mae Hawk Meets the Killer Groove Band and then -- starting in 2000 -- her earlier material began appearing on CD. Primordial Lovers was reissued by Rhino Handmade in a luxury package including non-LP singles and the entire follow-up album that had originally appeared on Asylum. Within a few years, additional albums -- including 1976's Essra -- were released as Japanese mini-LP CDs, and E-Turn also appeared on CD. In a phase of prolific creativity, albums including You're Not Alone and Love Is Still the Answer, as well as a career roundup of rarities, Revelations of the Secret Diva, were released. Maintaining her presence in television, Essra also contributed songs to the soundtracks of CBS series Joan of Arcadia and All My Children. Mohawk remains an active live attraction and recording artist.

Essra's first three albums were released on CD last year on Collectors Choice, much to the delight of music journalists and fans everywhere.

We are very pleased to welcome Essra Mohawk at Zappanale #22.

    BEARDFISH - MAMMOTH

Swedish band Beardfish has just released their 6th album. It's called "Mammoth", which suits it fine, because it's a monster!! This is a must-listen-to for progressive rock fans. MARBIN - BREAKING THE CYCLE

Jazz-rock band Marbin started out as a duo when Israeli saxophonist Danny Markovitch and Israeli-American guitarist Dani Rabin teamed up in 2007 (MARkovitch + raBIN = MARBIN).

In 2008 they relocated to Chicago and released their eponymous debut album. Shortly thereafter they took part in the recording of Paul Wertico's "Impressions Of A City" album, a release that got a lot of media attention. And now there's "Breaking The Cycle", the second Marbin CD.

"Breaking The Cycle" is an excellent album. The combination of impressive musicianship and beautiful, melodic compositions is stunning: great melodies and great improvisations. It's like they have never done anything else. I love it.

On this latest release, Marbin has transformed into a quartet with Steve Rodby on bass, and with Paul Wertico on drums. Especially Paul Wertico's contribution is remarkable. His drumming takes you from the jungle to Tom Waits' shed, and back.

    Highly recommended.
