THE RESIDENTS IN BRUSSELS

I saw The Residents in concert in Brussels earlier this week.
Actually, it was a slimmed-down / low-budget version of The Residents.

One 'original' R., backed by XXX on synth and sequencer, and by Nolan Cook on guitar.

Great show. Fabulous show.

Here's the encore:

the only dissappointment was that the new / rehearsal CD wasn't ready...

The Rez site says:

Live CD delayed AGAIN
The Rehearsal CD that will be sold on tour should be available at the show in BERLIN. There are 500 copies being made.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news that I am.

A pity.

The result is very impressive.
Great jazz tunes, with an almost hypnotic groove. Sun Ra is never far away.

JAN VAYNE - MEDIA PLAZA MOVEMENTS

Dutch pianist Jan Vayne has released an album on which he performs 12 improvisations à la Paganini. Each piece is done in a different style, representing a different western classical composer.
One of the pieces is entitled 'Het Medialab [Frank Vincent Zappa, 1940 - 1993]'.

The album was entitled "Media Plaza" and was commissioned by the Media Plaza, a media center in Utrecht, The Netherlands.
The Zappa inspired piece is only 1 minute and 33 seconds long, and it's a nice little piece. It doesn't ring any Zappa bells with me, but I like the result and the album concept.

I don't think this album ever got in the records shops. It's probably some sort of promotional release.

AKA MOON

Just to keep you posted on what's happening in the United Mutations Archives, I'd like to tell you that I've pasted info on two Aka Moon albums. Well, actually it's one Aka Moon album ("Guitars") and one of Fabrizio Cassol's projects (the "Pitié" album).
"Guitars" is an Aka Moon classic. Excellent jazz by the famous trio and their invited - guitarists - guests.
"Pitié" is an Alain Platel / Fabrizio Cassol project. It's a stage performance for which Fabrizio wrote the music, inspired by the Matthew Passion of J.S. Bach.
It's a fine mixture of classical elements and contemporary jazz.
All this as an intro for the next topic...

AKA MOON, BABA SISSOKO & BLACK MACHINE

Belgian jazz trio Aka Moon teamed up with Baba Sissoko and Black Machine to record "Culture Griot".
Those who are familiar with the music of Aka Moon and with their typical avant-garde, jazz sound, will be surprised. The collaboration with Baba Sissoko and his Black Machine band results in an album on which the african elements are very present. It's a difficult exercise and, at times, it seems difficult to locate the Aka Moon section in-between the repetitive, almost hypnotic sounding Black Machine.
Still, an Aka Moon album always is a joy to listen to.

ENRIQUE JARDINES

a message from Michel Delville:

It is my sad duty to report that Enrique Jardines passed away yesterday evening. As most of you know Enrique was the mastermind behind ABSOLUTE ZERO, an amazing Canterbury-affiliated band based in Florida. Their CD CRASHING ICONS (2003) is one of the few recent prog albums I often return to. It also features one of Pip Pyle's best studio performances, which is another reason to check it out if you have not had a chance to listen to it yet.
Although I never had a chance to meet him in person, we've exchanged many emails over the last few years. Enrique was one of my favorite email correspondents and a GREAT musician. He was a true "amigo", a warm-hearted man in the face of adversity and hardship. My thoughts go to him and his companion and ally Aislinn Quinn. I hear that there will be a wake on Saturday night, and a burial on Sunday, depending on the cemetery and the funeral company. I don't have any more specific details.
A few useful links should you want to learn more abput him and buy his CDs:

ZU - THE WAY OF THE ANIMAL POWERS

When I added the entry for Spaceways Incorporated last week, I also mentioned the Spaceways Inc / Zu collaboration. So here's a bit more on Zu:

Zu is an italian trio. It consists of

  • Luca Mai: baritone saxophone
  • Massimo Pupillo: bass
  • Jacopo Battaglia: drums

On "The Way Of The Animal Powers", Fred Lomberg-Holm joins the trio.
Zu plays experimental rock music. It's a sort of free jazz, but with a heavy angle.

"The Way Of The Animal Powers" got released on CD in 2005 on the now defunct Xeng label. It got re-issued last month on vinyl (180 g, swirled vinyl).

I really like this. Nice compositions, fine improvisations.
Fred Lomberg-Holm's cello adds an impressive, almost agressive tone to the recording. Dissonant and scratching at times, Fred's cello is the perfect counterbalance for Luca Mai's baritone sax.

THE TUBES & BEEFHEART

Last week, the blog mentioned the Tubes' version of Don Van Vliet's 'My Head Is My Only House...' on their "Now" album, as well as Don's contribution to 'Cathy's Clone'.

'My Head Is My Only House' is not the first time the Tubes have covered a Captain Beefheart track. During their 1976 show at the Shrine in Los Angeles they played his 'Gimme Dat Harp Boy' as a prelude to 'Love Will Keep Us Together'.

It can be found on the "Darted In My Own Armchair" Tubes bootleg.

Originally released on vinyl (in two versions), this concert got a CD re-release as "Live In Los Angeles 1976".

THE SOULJAZZ ORCHESTRA - RISING SUN

The Souljazz Orchestra got founded in Ottawa, Canada, in 2002. The band fuses jazz with Nigerian percussion and african and latin rhythms into the so-called Afrobeat.
They have released two albums on the Toronto-based Do Right! label, and now there's the brand-new "Rising Sun" on London-based Strut Records.

There are moments that "Rising Sun" leans towards ethnic jazz and it's obvious that the band has listened a lot to Sun Ra and to Pharoah Sanders.
I like it. I like it a lot.

"Rising Sun" is a feel-good album. A bit too clean or too clinical at times, but a great listen.
Laid-back. Warm. Feel-good.

THE MUFFINS - LOVELETTER #2

Yes, you read it right. The actual bandname & title for this release is "The Muffins with Marshall Allen & Knoel Scott: Loveletter #2 - The Ra Sessions".

For my taste, The Muffins embody what progressive rock / avant-jazz is all about. This is a band that plays high energy, instrumental, adventurous music. The band has recorded some ten albums, and at least a couple of them deserve your extra attention.

"Loveletter #2" got recorded in January 2004 in Baltimore. The liner-notes say that this album got recorded during the final sessions for the "Double Negative" album, which make this disc its companion.
The difference with the previous albums and projects is that the 7 tracks on this album are improvisations. The structures were laid out by The Muffins, and the rest was improvised.
It's wonderful to hear how well Arkestra members Marshall Allen and Noel Scott feel at easy in this environment.
I really like this album. While listening, you hear how the pieces get shaped, get formed, and grow.

Beautiful!

THE MUFFINS - DOUBLE NEGATIVE

"Double Negative" was recorded in 2002 and 2003. The 17 compositions that one finds on this disc are what one expects of The Muffins: varying tempos, moods and colours; great melodies and fine improvisations. For "Double Negative", The Muffins used a string ensemble. And they also invited Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott (both from The Sun Ra Arkestra) to join them on a couple of tunes, resulting in some fine free jazz solos.

"Double Negative", that's about as positive as it can get.
Recommended listening !

SUN RA - LOVE IN OUTER SPACE

Subtitled "Live In Utrecht", this recording will take you back to December 1983, to the fabulous Sun Ra & his Arkestra concert in Utrecht, NL.
"Love In Outer Space" presents about 55 minutes of the concert. And it sounds like it was a lot of fun. The choice of tunes is excellent and the solos are great. You get some of the bluesiest Sun Ra piano solos, some squeeking sax solos by John Gilmore, a superb percussion solo in between the last tracks, all backed by a swinging Arkestra.
'Fate In A Pleasant Mood', 'Round Midnight', 'Love In Outer Space / Space Is The Place', ...
Great atmosphere and public response.

This is a must have!

Your destiny is in the hand of fate.
All you got to do to change your destiny.
Find fate when fate is in a pleasant mood.

Picture and info have been added to the Sun Ra discography over at the United Mutations Archives.

SPACEWAYS INCORPORATED - THIRTEEN COSMIC STANDARDS

January 2000, Hamid Drake, Nate McBride and Ken Vandermark (or the Spaceways Incorportated ensemble) recorded "Thirteen Cosmic Standards by Sun Ra & Funkadelic", an album that was a mix of Sun Ra and Funkadelic compositions.

Performing the music of Sun Ra (or Funkadelic for that matter) with a trio isn't easy. I like what they do, but I'm not blown away by it. I sort of miss the wild, free solos and the energy that I'm used to when listening to Sun Ra.

In 2004, Spaceways Incorporated teamed up with italian ensemble Zu for a split release. The result also featured Sun Ra material.

THE RESPECT SEXTET - SIRIUS RESPECT

On "Sirius Respect", the Respect Sextet explores the music of Sun Ra and of Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Combining the music of these two composers seemed an excellent choice as it's amazing how the music fits together. Add a fabulous performance, fine arrangements and great solos, and you get "Sirius Respect".

Great album (plus excellent liner notes !).

Recommended listening.

SUN RA - FONDATION MAEGHT NIGHTS VOLUME 1

Let's kick off today's Sun Ra series with a strange re-issue of "Nuits de la Fondation Maeght Vol.1".
This is an italian edition, limited to 2000 copies. The label is Jazz View, and I've been told that this is a bootleg label, making this a non-authorised reproduction...
If you can get your hands on "Nuits de la Fondation Maeght", don't hesitate.
This edition, however, is best to be ignored.
